Camp Roberts 2020 Update

After much consideration, we have made the difficult decision to not hold our Camp Roberts summer day camp this year. This is not a decision we made lightly. We know the Camp Roberts ministry has a profound impact on the lives of the children we serve. The stories we hear from counselors at the end of every summer, and the testimonies from adults who attended camp as a child affirm this. Since the camp ministry began in 1975, we have never experienced an interruption in summer activities.

At the time of writing, there has been no clear communication from the Ohio Department of Health regarding summer day camps. If camps are permitted to be held, it would likely be with restrictions in place, some of which could prove impractical for our environment.

A significant consideration is the amount of time spent physically preparing the campgrounds. Normally we gradually begin work in mid to late April, with May being full of daily work around the property. The response to the COVID-19 pandemic has required our complete attention at the Mission, and we have not been able to spend the time needed at Camp Roberts. It is difficult to explain all that takes place in preparation for camp, but there is no way to “flip the switch” and have everything be ready to go. It is a long and deliberate process.

Though we will not be holding camp this year, there are still expenses associated with Camp Roberts. We have hired someone part-time to handle basic maintenance, such as mowing and trimming. Earlier this year, we replaced a water softener. Just recently, we found out that two sewer pumps and a control panel need to be replaced. Even in a “shut down” state, there are maintenance activities that take place throughout the year.

We know that considering current circumstances, most people will understand that we are not able to hold camp this year; but we also know that many will be disappointed. We have considered what could be done to allow us to hold camp in some form, but after reviewing all information, we feel the decision to cancel this year’s camp program is the best—and safest—option at this time. We appreciate your continued prayers for the ministry of Lima Rescue Mission, and for all the children who would have attended Camp Roberts this summer.
