Be Watchful

It is dangerous to associate devil only with darkness and evil. If we do, that is all we will be looking out for. Since he is a deceiver, we must be alert for what may not be obvious at first glance.

Jesus warns: “Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves” (Matthew 7:15).

Paul, while addressing the issue of false apostles, says that “even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light,” and “it is not surprising that his ministers also disguise themselves as ministers of righteousness” (2 Corinthians 11:14-15).

People posing as ministers of righteousness will use Scripture to make their case—the devil himself quoted Scripture when tempting Jesus—but most of the time they are taking Scripture out of context, applying it in ways it was never meant to be applied.

What’s the best way to be alert about who or what may be posing as light and truth? Check everything you hear against Scripture, and most importantly, be sure you are handling it accurately (2 Timothy 2:15). Ask questions, study the text. Use a study Bible, commentary, or other resources from trusted pastors and teachers. The Bible contains God’s truth, and that truth is accessible and understandable to all who study diligently. Don’t be discouraged about false teachers, but always be watchful.

“Be of sober spirit, be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” —1 Peter 5:8 (LSB)
